Electrical Faults: Where the Diagnosis Is the Bill

On most repairs the part costs money and the labour is predictable. On electrical faults the part is often trivial and the hunt is the entire invoice. That inversion changes how you should authorise the work.

Electrical work inverts the normal economics of a repair. A brake job is mostly parts and standardised labour. A wiring fault is mostly labour with a small part attached — sometimes a connector pin worth a few pence, located after three hours of tracing. Understanding that inversion is the difference between authorising sensibly and receiving an invoice that reads as though nothing was fixed.

Why the hunt is expensive

Modern vehicles carry multiple control modules communicating over a shared network, dozens of sensors, and a wiring harness with hundreds of connections. Faults in that system do not announce their location. They announce their effect.

A single corroded earth point can produce a set of symptoms so unrelated — a dashboard light, an intermittent window, a fuel gauge that reads oddly — that they look like several separate faults. A chafed wire behind a bracket presents only when the vehicle flexes over a particular bump. A connector that has taken water three winters ago fails on a cold morning and works perfectly in the workshop by ten o'clock.

None of that is found by plugging in a scanner. It is found by a technician with a wiring diagram, a multimeter, and time. That time is the product you are buying, and it is genuinely skilled work.

The tests that are quick, and the ones that are not

It is worth knowing which side of the line your complaint falls on, because the fast tests are cheap and should be done first.

Fast and definitive:

  • Battery and charging test. Load-testing a battery and measuring charging output takes minutes. A great many "electrical gremlins" are a battery that no longer holds up under load or a failing alternator, and both are ruled in or out immediately. Never authorise a hunt before this has been done.
  • Battery terminals and main earths. A visual and physical inspection. Corrosion here is common, cheap to fix, and causes wildly disproportionate symptoms.
  • Fuse and relay checks. Minutes of work.
  • Parasitic draw test. Measuring current with the vehicle asleep, then pulling fuses one at a time to isolate the circuit. Takes a while because modules need time to shut down, but it is a bounded, systematic procedure with a definite endpoint.

Slow and open-ended:

  • Intermittent faults with no stored codes.
  • Network communication faults, where the failure of one module can silence the bus and mask everything behind it.
  • Anything described as "sometimes, in the rain."

If your complaint is in the second group, the shop cannot honestly quote you a fixed price, and one that does is either padding for the worst case or planning to stop early.

How to authorise it without losing control of the bill

This is the practical core of the piece. Electrical diagnosis should be authorised in blocks.

Agree an initial block — an hour or two — with an explicit instruction to call before exceeding it. At each call, ask three questions: what has been ruled out, what is the current leading hypothesis, and what would the next block test? Those answers tell you whether the technician is converging on something or circling.

As a worked example of the arithmetic, assume a $150 posted labour rate and a fault that takes four hours to locate: $600 of diagnosis attached to a connector repair worth almost nothing in parts. That is not a shop overcharging you. That is what the work cost. The mistake to avoid is not the $600 — it is arriving at $600 without having been asked, twice, whether you wanted to keep going.

There is a point where a rational owner stops. A dashboard warning on a vehicle that otherwise drives normally may not be worth an unbounded hunt. Saying "stop at three hours and tell me where you got to" is a legitimate, adult instruction and any decent shop will respect it.

The module trap

One cost that quotes routinely omit: many replacement control modules must be programmed or coded to the vehicle before they will function, and some are matched to the immobiliser. That programming may require manufacturer software and a subscription, which is why independents sometimes send this specific step to a dealer.

So when a module replacement is quoted, ask directly: does this price include programming, and who performs it? A quote that covers only the part and the fitting can be materially incomplete. This is exactly the sort of thing that should appear as its own line, and it is worth checking against the general habits described in reading a service invoice.

Also worth knowing: aftermarket electrical accessories fitted after purchase — alarms, remote starters, audio installations, towing electrics — are a common origin point for harness faults, and they are also a common basis for a coverage denial under a service contract. What we would do

Insist the cheap tests come first: battery under load, charging output, earths, fuses. A surprising share of complaints end there, and it costs very little to find out.

If it goes further, authorise in blocks and take the call-backs seriously. Ask what has been eliminated, not just what is suspected — elimination is the real product of a diagnostic hour.

And accept the underlying reality rather than fighting it: on electrical work you are paying for the search, not the part. A shop that finds a chafed wire in ninety minutes has done you an enormous favour, even though the invoice will look, to the untrained eye, like you paid a great deal of money for a piece of tape.
